Some traditions become the heartbeat of a neighborhood, and the Chanukah Menorah lighting in Piazza Bologna is now one of them. For the 13th consecutive year, the Roman square was illuminated by the festival’s lights, but this year carried a new energy: attendance reached record highs, with crowds of residents, tourists, and families growing night after night.
Every Night a Light, Every Light a Family
The ritual was repeated daily with a special warmth. Each evening, the lighting was dedicated to a local family who had the honor of lighting the candles. Before the solemn moment, Rav Menachem Lazar shared inspiring words of Torah, offering reflections on the meaning of miracles and spiritual resilience.
Immediately following the blessing, the square transformed into an open-air celebration: festive music and the essential fresh donuts (sufganiyot) delighted the crowd, while dancing warmed the Roman winter air.
The Grand Finale
The climax, as per tradition, took place on Saturday night, drawing a massive audience. One of the most anticipated moments, especially for the children, was the chocolate coin parachute drop performed by the Fire Department, who also lit the Shamash using their aerial ladder. The soundtrack of the evening was provided by Josy Anticoli, whose music swept hundreds of people into dancing, turning Piazza Bologna into one big celebration.
